The Most Iconic Bags in the World

  • Posted by: angeli.krohmal

No woman can do without a truly beautiful bag, which will be considered a benchmark. We decided to remember the timeless classics, the apogee in the art of handbags from the most famous brands and chose the models that will be popular and relevant in any era.

Today we can not imagine life without a bag, especially for women. In general, this invention has already been around for several centuries. At first, the first such items served as pockets in clothes. A little later, the first small bags began to appear, which were tied to the waist and served only for storing money. By the way, mainly this accessory was popular with men, because in the Middle Ages women were completely dependent on their fathers or husbands. But soon, around the 18th century, they too began to adorn themselves with such accessories, in which they stored mainly women's essentials. Handbags were often richly decorated with embroidery or crystals, the richest people allowed themselves decorations made of gold thread, precious stones and the rarest fabrics.

In addition to money, the first bags served to store religious texts that people took with them to temples. Their shapes were already square and made of dense materials, fur and leather.

In the 19th century, along with industrialization came the mass production of both clothing and handbags. More and more convenient clasps were invented for these accessories. At the same time, the suitcase for large luggage was also invented - a credit to the well-known Louis Vuitton. Women were increasingly involved in society and the state, so bags began to be used more often for practical purposes. Class division was still very noticeable, so good bags cost a lot of money and were an indicator of prestige.

With the advent of the 20th century, the most popular and practical material for making bags was natural leather. It was quite difficult to process it, but pioneer craftsmen first in Italy and then in France were very successful in this business. In those days, a bag had to fit perfectly into a closet in terms of color.

Interesting facts: in addition to being a harmonious thoughtful part of the closet, the bag had other non-obvious functions besides storing things. Thus, during the period of emancipation, women really began to carry not only powder and lipstick, but also documents with money in their bags. Influential women of the past and present have used their handbags as a means of secret communication with their subordinates. For example, Her Majesty Elizabeth II used her handbag to signal to her assistants that she wanted to end a conversation with someone or leave a room or event. Lady Diana Spencer, a style icon to this day, often used her handbags and reticules as a defense against prying paparazzi. Another little trick of famous women is to hide their position as expectant mothers with the help of handbags.

Christian Dior adored women and his fashion vocation made him not only a sought-after designer, but also a happy man. Initially the Lady Dior bag was named differently, however, having received this beautiful model as a gift, Princess Diana loved it so much that she ordered herself every new color. The brand thanked the royalty for her loyalty and renamed the bag in her honor. Even today, the bag is still an incredibly elegant accessory in a variety of variations, and despite the fact that it has modern competitors (such as the Dior Saddle),remains the brand's most coveted bag.

Editor's tips for handbag selection:

Never skimp on quality when choosing a basic bag - it should be a loyal companion for any occasion. Choose the best materials and fittings. The size should be such that you can fit everything you need and still have some room to spare.

Pay attention to the handle - depending on the expected weight of the filled bag, you need wide and sturdy ones. You may also need a long strap if you plan to carry the bag in more than just your hands.

Of course, the universal color is always considered black, but do not limit yourself - among the dark shades of an excellent solution can be blue, brown, green and even burgundy.

Pay attention to details - the necessary number of small pockets, their location. The clasps of the bag and its pockets play an important role in the safety of the contents - do not neglect their quality.

The material of the bag is also important - and today not only leather or canvas can boast durability. Modern methods of textile processing help in expanding the choice of bags and other accessories. In addition, today eco-leather is also famous for its practicality.
